John Shearer

Entrepreneur John Shearer is one of the inventors of the Powercast Wireless Power Platform—an innovative way to recharge batteries using existing radio frequencies. Using Powercast, anything that requires a battery could continuously charge. Think of it: In the US alone, more than 350 million rechargeable batteries are purchased annually to power wireless sensors, cell phones, computer peripherals and other devices. Continuous recharging of batteries via the Powercast Wireless Power Platform has the potential to reduce the huge waste stream of batteries to a mere trickle. Shearer has also headed up several start-up and venture-backed companies, fostering innovation ranging from image conversion systems and output devices to large-scale data collection and network systems for power companies. Among his many honors, Shearer has been named Entrepreneur of the Year by the University of Colorado Graduate School of Business. Although he wanted to introduce the technology in a low-key way, once the audience at the Consumer Electronics Show spotted Powercast representatives charging phones and BlackBerries via radio waves, Shearer remarked, “Well, so much for that.”
